Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves

10 June 2010

Sisters chasing American dreams

TWO Cradley Heath footballers are preparing to chase their dream of playing professionally across the Atlantic.

Twin sisters Hannah and Lucy Goffe, both aged 18, hope to soon become big names across the South Eastern USA after earning soccer scholarships at East Tennessee State University.

The former Leasowes Community College pupils are the first international players chosen to play for the Buccaneers, an NCAA Division One side who play in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Hannah revealed the girls, who played for both Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion Ladies last season, applied for scholarships through the PASS4Soccer scheme. She said: “They got us in touch with the Universities.

“Because we were playing for both Aston Villa and West Brom they asked us to make videos of our matches, we also had to pass exams.

“We got plenty of offers, one University in Michigan even sent a scout over to watch one of our games. We chose East Tennessee because it had the best team.”

Right back Hannah and defensive midfielder Lucy began playing football at the age of five while pupils at Quinton Church School and are currently completing their A-Levels at Birmingham Metropolitan College.

Their four year scholarship will also include a degree course in Sports Exercise.

In terms of women’s football the USA is certainly the place to be, with the Women’s Professional Soccer League having been founded last year.

College sports receive extensive coverage and the girls will play home games in a 9,000-seater stadium.

Away games could also take some getting used to, with some of the Bucs’ opponents based almost 1,000 miles away.

Lucy added: “America is where all the top players want to play and we know it is the place to be.

“At the end of the four years there is a chance we could be drafted by one of the professional sides, which is obviously the dream.

“It will be hard work. The American coaches are 100 per cent dedicated to everything.

“We would both like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way.”

Hannah and Lucy have also commented in a recent email to PASS4Soccer,

"Hi Daniel,

We would just like to say a big "thank you" for all of the support you and the PASS4Soccer team have given us throughout this entire process. We received our VISA's this morning, after travelling down to the US Embassy last Wednesday, so we are almost set to go now! We just have a few more things to sort out now and then sure we will be off before we know it! :) As we say, we are so grateful for all of your help and if there is any way that we can help to promote PASS4Soccer in the future or any jobs that you need doing :) we would be more than happy to help out!

Thanks to your advice and guidance we feel completely prepared for this next stage in our lives and will never be able to say thank you enough.

Hope to speak again soon and kind regards as always,

Hannah and Lucy"

PASS4Soccer would like to wish Hannah and Lucy all the best for there new future at East Tennessee State University and we will look forward to reading about future successes.
